the page we’re on

The Word for today:
Judges 3:7-31

Can we locate the USA in the Bible?

Geographically, we cannot.

And (this may surprise you) prophetically we cannot. (We sometimes think we are the center of things, but always remember that in scripture Israel (specifically Jesus, who would arise out of Israel) is the apple of God’s eye.

But spiritually, I think we’ve located today’s USA. We’re right here in this verse:

In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. (Judges 21:25)

Israel had been a nation close to God, led by great founding patriarchs. But it wasn’t long before they drifted away from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. To see how fast a nation can fall, let’s deconstruct this verse:

And the people of Dan set up the carved image for themselves, and Jonathan the son of Gershom, son of Moses, and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land. (Judges 18:30/ESV)

Talk about apostasy! Moses’ grandson Jonathan is a priest with idols. He is the poster boy for doing what was right in his own eyes.

So soon forgotten.
After Joshua and his generation had died, the succeeding generation turned away from God. Any generation is only one step away from forsaking God, from breaking His heart.

We live on the page between Joshua and Judges:
“In this day of gathering storms, as moral deterioration of political power spreads its growing infection, it is essential that every spiritual force be mobilized to defend and preserve the religious base upon which this nation is founded; for it has been that base which has been the motivating impulse to our moral and national growth. History fails to record a single precedent in which nations subject to moral decay have not passed into political and economic decline. There has been either a spiritual reawakening to overcome the moral lapse, or a progressive deterioration leading to ultimate national disaster.” --Douglas MacArthur

We don’t have to stay on that page, but that’s where we are.
